OK, I was a bit skeptical when I stumbled across the Australian novel, Saltwater Vampires. After all, I’m definitely not your usual consumer of books in the “Teen Paranormal Romance” section of the bookstore. However after recently reading a good surf novel I was hungry for more fiction, so I purchased a copy online and waited for it to arrive. First off, I’m happy to report that this is not a teen paranormal romance book. Yes, there are vampires and yes there is some teen romance, but this isn’t a lazy rip-off of the Twilight Saga (thank god since that series was not for me). Instead, Saltwater Vampires is a very readable Young Adult book that blends one of my favorite things, surfers, with another thing that I find curiously interesting, vampires. The author, Kirsty Eagar, does an excellent job of weaving a story about a group of young Australian surfers who stumble into a 400-year-old vampire conspiracy. Sounds  ridiculous? Of course it does, but that’s ok because the book carries the reader along at a brisk, fun, and edgy pace. There are plenty of opportunities for you to suspend reality in this book, so don’t come into this with false expectations: this is a book about surfers and vampires. But it’s a very entertaining, well written, and surprisingly believable book. This is a good one for young adults on up.  (April 2012)
