Let me start with the basics. Native Moments, the debut novel from Nic Schuck, is a fun, very entertaining read that will arrive in bookstores this Fall. Native Moments is the story of two friends who leave everything behind to find a more “satisfying” life of surf, drink, drugs, and fun in Costa Rica. Hailing from Pensacola, our two heavily flawed, and mind numbingly ignorant, heroes move through the book in a haze, making friends and enemies with ease, all the while searching for simple work to keep the stoke and party going. As you’d expect, there are good times, and there are some shockingly bad times. Fortunately for the reader, it’s Schuck’s skill in writing quick, clean dialogue that keeps the story moving, even if our lead characters aren’t evolving quite as fast.  Ultimately, Schuck does a good job of showing the multilayered cake that is Costa Rica, complete with surfing paradise, dangerous fauna, unlimited vice, all of which is coated in a sweet, ironic icing of Pura Vida. This is a great book to toss in your board bag on your next surf trip. (May 2016)
